Netflix UK has removed the controversial film The Nightingale as part of its latest content cull. The 2018 psychological thriller, directed by Jennifer Kent of The Babadook fame, follows a young Irish convict seeking vengeance against colonial forces in 1820s Tasmania after suffering brutal sexual assault and murder.
The film, starring Aisling Franciosi, has been described as a tough watch not for the faint-hearted. It originally prompted walkouts during its cinema release due to graphic portrayals of rape and violence. Despite the backlash, it holds an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though critics have questioned whether its brutality is pushed too far.
Other titles removed from Netflix UK include the Final Destination and Hunger Games franchises. The streaming giant also recently pulled the acclaimed sci-fi series Lost, which remains available on ITVX for free and on Disney+ with a premium subscription.
Netflix’s catalogue is constantly evolving, meaning subscribers should expect both new additions and periodic removals of popular titles.
