Neil Patrick Harris Family Night at The Lost Boys

Neil Patrick Harris made the red carpet a family affair over the weekend, stepping out for a rare public appearance alongside his husband, David Burtka, and their twin children, Gideon and Harper. The How I Met Your Mother star, 52, was accompanied by his American actor husband, 50, and their 15-year-old twins at the Broadway opening night of The Lost Boys.

A Family Affair on Broadway

Harris serves as a co-producer and investor for the musical, which is an adaptation of the 1980s vampire film. The Tony winner and Burtka coordinated with their two children, all sporting edgy black and red themed outfits for the evening at the Palace Theatre in New York City.

The Smurfs actor wore a striking red blazer over a black T-shirt and jeans, while Burtka opted for an all-black ensemble accented with a red tie. Gideon donned a black suit paired with a red and black checked shirt, and Harper wore a red mini dress layered with a black see-through top and a furry black coat.

Proud Parents on the Red Carpet

Harris and Burtka, who have been married since 2014, were all smiles as they proudly posed with their twin children on the red carpet together in New York City.

Nearly two years ago, the couple opened up about their love for fatherhood and revealed that their teenage kids' friends have dubbed them the 'coolest parents of the friend group.'

'They've been great,' Harris told People about their relationship with their children as they entered their formative teenage years in 2024. 'They're surprisingly great. They're city kids. They live in Manhattan, New York, so I find them fairly mature 13-year-olds, but it's nice to see them navigate the world now that they're teenagers with some sense of knowledge and sense of self.'

The acclaimed actor continued: 'That's what we work really hard as parents to do is instill some sort of values into them, and then you sort of let them go and exist, and they're crushing it.' He added that he and his husband are 'very proud of them.'

Balancing School and Social Life

Harris also gushed about their hardworking children and how much they enjoy being their kids' dads, though he admitted their home has not yet become the 'hangout spot' they hope it will be.

'Honestly, they're at such a rigorous school. Literally, they come home and do homework. It's wild,' he said. 'Not a hangout house yet. I mean, there are play dates and sleepovers and things like that, but maybe soon.'

Burtka chimed in and proudly shared the compliment from their kids' friends: 'We're definitely told we're the coolest parents out of all the friend groups.' To which Harris jokingly added, 'I didn't realize it was a competition.'

Later, Harris added, 'You hope as kids get older that they want to share more with you and are willing to tell you when things are happening, as opposed to just keeping you out of the loop. So that's nice to hear.' Burtka concluded, 'The more access you give them to yourself, I think the more access they'll give to you.'

The twins, Gideon and Harper, were welcomed via surrogate in 2010, and Harris and Burtka tied the knot in 2014.
