Meryl Streep has said she is 'happy to represent' older women as she reprises her role as Miranda Priestly in the upcoming sequel to The Devil Wears Prada. The Oscar-winning actress, now 76, noted that women over 50 often 'disappear into the woodwork' and that it is unusual to see a woman of her age playing such a powerful character.
Streep, who first played the ice-queen magazine editor in the 2006 original, will return alongside Anne Hathaway as Andy Sachs in the sequel, nearly 20 years later. The actress said she was delighted to reunite with Hathaway and the rest of the cast, including Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci.
The sequel, set in 2026, will see Miranda facing a crisis as glossy magazines struggle in the modern media landscape. Streep explained that the film explores how technology, particularly the iPhone, has transformed publishing. 'The film we made in 2006 came out the year before the iPhone. There were no iPhones. That thing that you all have in your pockets has changed everything in publishing,' she said.
Streep also reflected on the global success of the original film, which grossed $326 million worldwide. She said she was 'shocked' that men also embraced the story, with many telling her they related to Miranda's position of responsibility. 'This is the first film I've been in, in 50 years where men came and said, 'I know how you felt',' she added.
The actress, who recently appeared on the cover of Vogue with editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, said she enjoyed the collaboration. 'Anna's such a great sport. And she's also 76. We're the same age!' she said. Streep is rumoured to be dating her Only Murders in the Building co-star Martin Short following her separation from her husband of 45 years.
