New Lord of the Rings 50p Coin Marks 25 Years Since Film Release
Lord of the Rings 50p Coin Celebrates 25th Anniversary

The Royal Mint has unveiled a new 50p collectable coin commemorating the 25th anniversary of Peter Jackson's film The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Released on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, this coin is the first in a seven-strong collection celebrating the epic fantasy trilogy over the next three years, with future releases timed to coincide with the 25th anniversaries of all three films.

Design and Features

The coin's design centres on the One Ring, the central symbol of power in JRR Tolkien's saga. Created by Royal Mint coin designer Thomas T Docherty, the reverse side features Elvish lettering and the Black Speech inscription: "One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them." A groundbreaking feature allows a hidden image of the Eye of Sauron to appear when light strikes the coin's surface, engineered by craftspeople to focus light precisely.

Collector Appeal

Rebecca Morgan, director of commemorative coin at The Royal Mint, described it as "a remarkable feat of British craftsmanship" and urged fans to see it to believe it. The coin's packaging includes a map of Middle-earth, designed for display individually or as a collection. Prices start at £15, available from 9am on May 20 via the Royal Mint's website.
