Interstellar live orchestra show coming to Co-op Live

Christopher Nolan's 2014 film Interstellar is set to be screened live with a full orchestra at Co-op Live in Manchester on Sunday, May 9, 2027. The event, announced on Monday morning (October 19), will feature two performances — one matinee and one evening — accompanied by Manchester Camerata performing Hans Zimmer's Academy Award and BAFTA-nominated score.

A Beloved Nolan Film

Nolan is one of the UK's most successful directors of recent years. In 2024, he won both Best Picture and Best Director at the 96th Academy Awards for Oppenheimer, which was famously released on the same day as Barbie in an event branded Barbenheimer. Outside of Oppenheimer, Nolan is known for the Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception, Dunkirk and Tenet.

Earlier in the year, his latest film The Odyssey broke box office records. Starring Matt Damon, it became both the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time and Nolan's highest-grossing film.

Set on an uninhabitable Earth, Interstellar follows farmer and ex-NASA pilot Joseph Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), who is tasked with piloting a spacecraft with a team of researchers to find a new planet for humans. The film also stars Anne Hathaway, Sir Michael Caine, Jessica Chastain and Casey Affleck.

Live Orchestra Performance

Helping bring the score to life will be Manchester Camerata, led by acclaimed conductor Martin Gellner. Roger Sayer, the organist personally selected by Zimmer to perform the original Interstellar soundtrack, will be among the performers.

The show's description states: "At the heart of the performance will be acclaimed organist Roger Sayer, whose connection to Interstellar goes back to the creation of the original soundtrack. Sayer was hand-picked by Zimmer to record the organ elements of the score, giving audiences at Co-op Live the opportunity to hear one of the musicians behind the original recording perform this extraordinary music live."

"That music will be led in Manchester by Martin Gellner, who has conducted and served as music supervisor on the symphonic tour The World of Hans Zimmer. He will conduct Manchester Camerata, whose work ranges from touring international concert halls to performing live with the Pet Shop Boys on MTV to over 300 million people worldwide."
