Hip-hop pioneer Sparky D, born Doreen Broadnax, has died at the age of 61. Her family announced her death in a statement, and the Okayplayer Instagram page confirmed the news with an emotional post.

Legacy in Hip-Hop

Sparky D earned widespread respect as one of hip-hop’s earliest prominent female battle rappers. She is best remembered for her role in the legendary Roxanne Wars, particularly her iconic response record 'Sparky’s Turn (Roxanne, You’re Through).' The Okayplayer post stated: 'Her impact extends far beyond her recordings. MC Sparky D helped carve out space for generations of women in rap, proving their voices belonged at the forefront of the culture.'

Personal Struggles

In interviews, Sparky D spoke about her difficult life, including domestic abuse and a crack cocaine addiction. In a 2022 interview with Live @...Radio, she said: 'Being that he was my boyfriend, I wanted to do it. He never pressured me. A lot of girls do it because their boyfriends do it you know and then they get hooked. Just say no. Addiction is real... it's a dark place, a dark, dark place.'
