Linda Carter was determined to get answers about what really happened between son Lee and partner Jess in Wednesday's EastEnders episode, after something Callum Highway said piqued her interest.
Lee returned to the Square earlier in the week with sister Nancy, who confirmed that she was pregnant with his baby. Lee explained that Nancy is a surrogate for him and his partner Jess, who has vanished without a trace and blocked him on all platforms.
Linda's suspicions grow
Nancy sought legal advice from brother Johnny, who confirmed that – if she doesn't surrender her parental rights – then Jess need not know about the birth of the baby. Linda was adamant that her clan have no more secrets, but it turned out Lee hadn't been completely honest about what happened with Jess, who attempted to make contact in subsequent scenes.
Lee answered the call and told Jess to stay away, claiming that the baby is nothing to do with her. In typical Linda fashion, it didn't take long for the matriarch to work out that something was awry in Lee's story – especially after Callum informed her that Lee said he'd had a lucky escape from Jess.
Linda's plan backfires
This conflicted with the version of events he'd told her previously, and thus Linda decided to snoop, hoping to get answers. When she couldn't get access to her son's phone, she proceeded to quiz him further. Lee, however, stuck to what he'd said previously, claiming that he cannot find or get in touch with Jess.
As Lee enjoyed a drink with Nancy and Johnny, he was panicked to receive a text from Linda, who claimed to have spoken to Jess. He rushed to the B&B, where Linda revealed she lied in a bid to see how he would react – and her plan worked, with Lee evidently worried about the prospect of her talking to his ex.
What's next for Lee?
Again, Lee stuck to his story, claiming that Jess is nowhere to be found. Unwilling to let this go, Linda resolved to take a trip with her son in order to locate Jess, which left Lee all the more frustrated.
The question is: now that she knows there's more to this than meets the eye, will Linda succeed in getting the truth out of Lee? Will they locate Jess? And if so, will the real reason for the distance between she and Lee come to light?
