A Chinese trapeze artist has died after falling during a performance in Suzhou, Anhui province, on Saturday. The woman, identified only by her surname Sun, fell onto a hard stage after a stunt went wrong with her partner, who is also her husband.
Footage shared online shows Sun falling from a significant height after her husband, surnamed Zhang, failed to catch her with his legs. She was taken to hospital but died from her injuries. The couple, who had worked together for many years, often performed without safety belts, according to local news outlet The Paper.
The incident has sparked outrage in China, with social media users calling for better safety regulations in the acrobatics industry. Some have noted that performances often lack safety mats or nets. The local Culture and Tourism Department stated that the performance troupe did not have sufficient approval for the act and will be dealt with accordingly.
Sun leaves behind two children. An investigation into the incident is underway.
