Edinburgh is widely regarded as one of the UK's most beautiful cities, and there is a simple way to get the best view of its magnificent castle without having to deal with crowds. Having grown up in Edinburgh, I have noticed that many tourists rely on social media to find photogenic spots, often missing out on hidden gems.
The Overcrowded Waterstones Spot
Visiting the Waterstones bookshop on Princes Street has become enormously popular online, as its cafe boasts a remarkable view of the castle. Head up to the third floor, where the grand Victorian windows frame a stunning view, perfect for enjoying with a bite to eat. However, this spot has become a social media cliche, with only three tables near the windows, making seating incredibly scarce. The cafe frequently becomes packed, and even if you secure a seat, people hover over you to snap photographs.
A Superior Alternative: The Willow Tea Rooms
For a superior view of Edinburgh Castle, bypass Waterstones and head next door to the Willow Tea Rooms, a stunning restaurant celebrated for its afternoon tea service. Most tourists remain unaware of its existence, as from street level it appears small and dimly lit, causing many to pass by. Inside, a staircase leads to a larger dining space with even more expansive windows, providing an even more impressive castle view. It is typically straightforward to secure a table, with ample room, so you need not worry about people taking photographs above your head while you relax.
Why It Is Worth Visiting
The Willow Tea Rooms is among my absolute favourite spots in the city. It encapsulates everything I adore about Edinburgh in a single panorama. If you visit Edinburgh and want to capture fantastic photographs or simply savour beautiful scenery while dining, I wholeheartedly recommend this hidden gem.
