David Beckham had a heartbreaking response to Victoria's World Cup call regarding news about their eldest son, Brooklyn. The World Cup brings a mix of memories for the couple, especially after recent family developments.
The Fateful Call
Sir David Beckham once recalled how desperately he wanted to be by wife Victoria's side after learning she was expecting their first child, Brooklyn. However, the timing could hardly have been worse. He received the news the night before England's notorious clash with Argentina at the 1998 World Cup.
That round-of-16 encounter went down in England's World Cup history for all the wrong reasons. Beckham was sent off in Saint-Etienne as Argentina twice fought back to level a 2-2 draw before ultimately defeating the Three Lions in a penalty shootout. The Manchester United and Real Madrid legend, now 51, was at least able to board an earlier flight home to share in the joy of the pregnancy news with Victoria.
Family Estrangement
Yet the warmth of that moment feels a world away from the current state of affairs. Brooklyn, now 27, has been estranged from his parents following a string of revelations last year. Tensions have only continued to escalate after he recently featured in an advertisement for DoorDash that appeared to poke fun at the family rift.
In the advert, Brooklyn is shown lounging on his sofa. He remarks: "You're probably wondering why I'm watching the FIFA World Cup 2026 from home." He then laughs and tosses his World Cup tickets onto a coffee table, adding: "It's a long story."
Contrasting Memories
It is a far cry from the fondness with which his parents once recounted the moment David learned 'Posh' was pregnant. He was already in France, preparing for the last-16 showdown against Argentina, when a single phone call turned his world upside down.
Speaking on the 2023 Beckham Netflix documentary, Victoria said: "He was so so happy, we both were. There was never any doubt in my mind I shouldn't tell him, it was what we wanted. He could not have been happier."
Director Frazer Campbell quizzed: "So you tell him the night before the biggest game of his life. Did you think it would help?" Victoria admitted she was unsure at the time. When Campbell asked whether David had wanted to leave England's camp, he replied: "It was the first thing I wanted to do but I couldn't."
He was soon given permission to return home and be with his family following the news. Brooklyn, however, has made it abundantly clear he is very much distanced from the family this World Cup, as demonstrated by his recent advertising cameo.
