Forget multiplexes and recliner seats—the most unique cinematic experience in Britain has just been unveiled inside a beautifully restored 1940s railway carriage in Swindon.
The extraordinary project, named 'The Sidings', is the passion project of husband-and-wife team Howard and Sue Robinson. They have spent years transforming a historic Mark 1 British Railways carriage into a fully functional, 24-seat boutique cinema, offering a slice of big-screen nostalgia.
A Labour of Love on the Tracks
The Robinsons, who run the Cricklade Railway enthusiast line, sourced the dilapidated carriage for just £1. But the real cost came in the form of a monumental restoration effort. Every element, from the original upholstery to the period-specific lighting, has been meticulously returned to its former glory, authentically capturing the spirit of 1940s rail travel.
'We wanted to create something truly special,' Howard explained. 'It's not just about watching a film; it's about stepping back in time and experiencing the golden age of rail, all while enjoying a classic movie.'
Lights, Camera, Vintage Action!
Patrons won't find modern digital projectors here. In keeping with the vintage theme, films will be shown using a traditional 35mm film projector, adding a layer of classic authenticity to the viewing experience. The cinema will specialise in screening iconic films from the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, perfectly matching its ambience.
The carriage doesn't just show movies; it provides a full immersive experience. Guests can enjoy a pre-show drink in a separate waiting room carriage styled as a 1940s station waiting room, complete with a vintage ticket booth and period advertisements.
A New Destination for Film and History Buffs
Located on the Cricklade Railway line, 'The Sidings' is more than a cinema; it's a new tourist attraction for Wiltshire. It represents a creative and successful preservation of British transport heritage, finding a new, exciting purpose for a piece of history that might otherwise have been lost.
The unique venture has already generated significant excitement locally and within railway enthusiast circles, promising a truly unforgettable night out at the movies.
