Welsh Opera Star Wynne Evans Slams Daily Mail Over Giovanni Pernice Article
Wynne Evans criticises Daily Mail over Pernice article

Welsh opera singer and BBC Radio Wales presenter Wynne Evans has publicly criticised the Daily Mail over its recent article about Strictly Come Dancing professional Giovanni Pernice.

Evans, best known for his role as Gio Compario in the Go Compare adverts, took to social media to express his frustration with the newspaper's coverage. He described the piece as an example of 'lazy journalism', questioning the publication's editorial standards.

The article in question focused on Pernice's teaching methods following his early exit from this year's Strictly series with celebrity partner Amanda Abbington. Evans argued that the Daily Mail had unfairly targeted the dancer without proper context or evidence.

'Unfair Character Assassination'

In his post, Evans wrote: 'This is exactly why people are losing faith in mainstream media. Instead of proper investigative journalism, we get this sort of character assassination based on hearsay.'

The Welsh broadcaster's comments have sparked debate among fans of the show, with many agreeing that Pernice deserves fair treatment. Others have pointed out that the Daily Mail has form for sensationalist reporting about Strictly professionals.

Background of the Controversy

The controversy stems from reports about Pernice's allegedly 'militant' training style, which emerged after his early departure from the 2023 series. However, many of his former partners, including Rose Ayling-Ellis and Debbie McGee, have publicly defended his methods.

Evans, who has himself been a vocal supporter of the arts in Wales, suggested that the newspaper should focus on more substantial issues affecting the entertainment industry rather than creating drama where none exists.

Neither the Daily Mail nor Pernice have responded publicly to Evans' comments at the time of writing.
