Worst Neighbor Ever's Shawna Scott: 16 Surgeries & Family Reunion
Worst Neighbor Ever: Shawna Scott's 16 Surgeries & Family Reunion

Shawna Scott, who survived being shot in the face by her neighbor Frances Zaayer in 2018, has spoken out about the ordeal in Netflix's new true crime documentary series Worst Neighbor Ever. The attack killed her husband David, a deputy jailer, and left Shawna with devastating injuries requiring 16 facial surgeries.

The Attack and Aftermath

In 2018, Frances Zaayer fired a gun at Shawna and David Scott after a months-long dispute that Shawna describes as racially motivated. David died at the scene, while Shawna was rushed to hospital with severe facial injuries. She recalls being told she needed to stay in hospital for at least three weeks but refused for David's funeral.

Shawna said in the documentary: "I couldn't believe it. Our lives were torn apart in that moment." She underwent 16 surgeries to repair broken bones in her face, losing sight in her left eye and hearing in her left ear, and now has scars on her face.

Family Reunion

Years after the incident, Shawna has reconciled with her daughter, with whom she temporarily fell out during the neighbor dispute. She now has regular contact with her two grandchildren, one of whom was born after David's funeral. Her daughter and grandchildren have moved back to Mount Sterling.

Shawna said: "I just want to be here for my kids and my grandkids because they are the most important thing to me." She continues to take it "one day at a time" but lives in fear of Frances being paroled. "It's my biggest fear for Frances to be paroled. My fear for my kids, my family. Honestly, I hope she never gets out. There's still a fear that's in the back of my head every day."

About the Series

Worst Neighbor Ever premiered on Netflix on July 1, 2026, with all four episodes available to stream. The series, from the creators of Worst Ex Ever and Worst Roommate Ever, uses real bodycam footage, interviews with victims, and animated re-enactments. The official synopsis says: "You think you know your neighbours? Think again. This new series features first-hand accounts of violence, intimidation, and harassment that are more shocking than ever."

The first episode focuses on Shawna and David Scott's dispute with Frances Zaayer, which Netflix's Tudum describes as beginning as "a fun rekindling of a teenage friendship" before turning into "racially motivated violence that tears Shawna's family apart."
