Streaming surge for Wonderwall after England victory
Oasis's iconic 1995 song Wonderwall experienced a 51% increase in listeners on Spotify following England's 2-1 World Cup quarter-final win over Norway on Saturday, July 11, 2026. The track has become an unofficial anthem for the men's national football team during the 2026 World Cup, with players and fans singing it together after matches.
The trend began after England's opening game, a 4-2 victory over Croatia, and continued after the thrilling win against Norway. According to Spotify data, Wonderwall recorded 371,298 streams in the 24 hours following the match, placing it at number three on the platform's daily UK chart.
Liam Gallagher shows support
Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher has embraced the song's resurgence, posting on X: "cmon England, cmon Wonderwall." After England's semi-final qualification, he expressed confidence in the squad, saying "we're winning this (World Cup)." The song, written by his brother Noel Gallagher, reached number two on the UK singles chart in 1995 and remains one of the band's most recognisable hits.
Other football anthems see boosts
Spotify reported that other football-associated tracks also saw significant listener increases. Three Lions by David Baddiel, Frank Skinner and the Lightning Seeds, a staple since its 1996 release, had a 278% rise and became Spotify's top song of the day with 392,980 streams. Vindaloo by Fat Les, originally a parody of football chants, saw a 381% boost. New Order's World In Motion, the official anthem for the 1990 tournament, increased by 356%, while Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline, popular at sporting events, rose by 136%.
