The trailer for the film Wicker has sparked a frenzy online, with fans reacting with unexpected thirst to the sight of Alexander Skarsgård as a sentient, and notably virile, wicker husband. The movie, starring Olivia Colman as a ridiculed fisherwoman who orders a husband woven from wicker, premiered quietly at Sundance in January, but the trailer, released Thursday, has changed all that.
Fans go wild over the racy trailer
The unexpectedly raunchy trailer features bed-breaking antics and an explicit soundtrack, leading to a wave of humorous and thirsty reactions. Social media users have dubbed the film '50 Shades of Hay' and 'Pornocchio', with one user quipping, 'A tisket, a tasket, a fully functional and anatomically correct basket.' Another added, 'wickery dickery dock, this basket has a c**k'.
Some fans drew comparisons to the Scarecrow from the Wicked sequel, with comments like 'Fiyero walked so Wickerman could run' and 'Wickered For GOOD.' Others noted the similarity to Beauty and the Beast, with one user suggesting, 'It's giving Beauty and the Beast where he's both the beast AND the furniture.'
Concerns and praise
While most reactions were positive, some expressed concerns about the character's fate, especially after seeing scissors in the trailer. One fan demanded to know if Skarsgård remains in wicker form for the entire movie, while another observed a trend: 'So after vampires, werewolves, dragons and now wicker, I think it's safe to say the trend is: anything but a human man.'
Skarsgård has previous experience playing non-human characters, such as a vampire in True Blood and a security cyborg in Murderbot. The film also stars Elizabeth Debicki, Peter Dinklage, Richard E. Grant, Nabhaan Rizwan, and Ella Bruccoleri.
Release dates
Wicker is in UK and Irish cinemas on October 30, and releases in the US on October 23.
