Vernon Kay Reveals Moby's Play Brings Back Grim Seasick Holiday Memory
Vernon Kay: Moby's Play Reminds Me of Grim Seasick Trip

Vernon Kay has revealed that Moby's iconic album Play is now impossible for him to listen to, after a holiday fishing trip in Tenerife with his wife Tess Daly turned disastrous. The BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show presenter shared the story ahead of Moby's appearance on the station, explaining how rough seas left him feeling so unwell that the album has been difficult to hear ever since.

A Fishing Trip Gone Wrong

Vernon described the excursion as a miserable experience, with terrible waves turning what should have been an enjoyable holiday activity into something he has never forgotten. He said: "Can't listen to that Moby Play album, I cannot listen to that, because we, Tess and I, went on a holiday together to Tenerife, and we went on a fishing trip. And the waves were terrible."

The conditions proved difficult for everyone on board, with the group struggling to cope as the boat rocked in the choppy waters. He added: "Every single person on the fishing trip, about ten of us. Every single person, I'm not even lying. I'm not exaggerating. I am telling you the truth. Every single person was sicky, sicky, poo, poo."

The Soundtrack of the Ordeal

The situation became so unpleasant that passengers were either being sick over the side of the boat or heading to the communal toilet. But it was the music playing during the trip that gave the experience a lasting association with Moby's album. Vernon recalled: "Either over the side, or in the communal toilet, it was grim. And the music playing in the background was Moby's Play album."

The memory still affects him whenever he hears one of the tracks, with the music bringing back the sensations he experienced at sea. He said: "So every time I hear a single track from that, I am swaying like a flag in the breeze. It's horrendous."

Family Milestones

The anecdote comes days after Vernon celebrated a milestone for his eldest daughter Phoebe during his Radio 2 show, reflecting on how quickly she has grown up. Speaking to fellow presenter Sara Cox on Friday, October 16, Vernon revealed that Phoebe was turning 22. "It's our eldest daughter's birthday today," he said, before asking: "Where? Where has that time gone?"

He later shared a series of photographs on social media to mark the occasion, writing: "Happy Birthday PHOEBE KAY! ! ! 22 Time flies! ! A joy watching you become the woman you are!" Phoebe is the eldest of Vernon's two daughters with Tess. They also have a teenage daughter, Amber.

Vernon and Tess announced their separation in May, saying they "remain great friends and most importantly, fully committed to our roles as loving and supportive parents, which will always be our priority".
