Vernon Kay: Moby album triggers 'horrendous' holiday memory

Vernon Kay has revealed that Moby's album Play triggers unpleasant memories after a disastrous fishing trip in Tenerife with his wife Tess Daly. The BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show presenter shared the story ahead of Moby's appearance on the station, explaining that the experience left him unable to listen to the album without feeling queasy.

A Trip to Forget

Speaking on his show, Vernon admitted the trip had been anything but enjoyable, with the conditions at sea making it an experience he has never forgotten. He said: "Can't listen to that Moby Play album, I cannot listen to that, because we, Tess and I, went on a holiday together to Tenerife, and we went on a fishing trip. And the waves were terrible."

Vernon went on to describe how the rough conditions affected everyone aboard the boat, revealing that the group had struggled to cope with the boat's movement. He said: "Every single person on the fishing trip, about ten of us. Every single person, I'm not even lying. I'm not exaggerating. I am telling you the truth. Every single person was sicky, sicky, poo, poo."

Music and Memory

The presenter explained that the passengers had been left feeling so unwell that they were either throwing up over the side of the boat or making their way to the communal toilet. He added that the music playing throughout the ordeal had cemented the album's association with the miserable experience. Vernon said: "Either over the side, or in the communal toilet, it was grim. And the music playing in the background was Moby's Play album."

The memory has clearly stayed with him, with the presenter explaining that hearing any of the tracks can bring the unpleasant sensations flooding back. He said: "So every time I hear a single track from that, I am swaying like a flag in the breeze. It's horrendous."

Family Milestones

The revelation comes days after Vernon celebrated his eldest daughter Phoebe's 22nd birthday live on Radio 2, reflecting on how quickly she has grown up. Speaking to fellow presenter Sara Cox on Friday, October 16, Vernon revealed that Phoebe was celebrating her 22nd birthday. "It's our eldest daughter's birthday today," he said, before confirming her age and asking: "Where? Where has that time gone?"

He later shared a series of photographs on social media to celebrate the milestone, writing: "Happy Birthday PHOEBE KAY!!! 22 Time flies!! A joy watching you become the woman you are!" Phoebe is the eldest of Vernon's two daughters with Tess. They also share teenage daughter Amber. Vernon and Tess announced their separation in May, saying they "remain great friends and most importantly, fully committed to our roles as loving and supportive parents, which will always be our priority".
