Vernon Kay recalls awkward first date with Tess Daly after card was declined

Vernon Kay has opened up about an embarrassing moment during his first date with wife Tess Daly, when his bank card was declined. The 51-year-old presenter and model met the Strictly Come Dancing host in 2001, and they married two years later.

Recalling the date at Zilli Fish restaurant in London, Kay admitted he ordered a bottle of pinot grigio, only to discover his date did not like the wine. To make matters worse, when the bill arrived, his card was rejected, leaving Tess to pay.

In a separate conversation, Kay named Jesus Christ as his ideal dinner party guest, saying: 'Surely Jesus is the ultimate party guest. Would it not be amazing to go out with a fella who can turn water into bottles of wine, and five loaves of bread and two fish into enough food to feed an entire party?'

Reflecting on his marriage, Kay emphasised the importance of communication, describing marriage as a 'roller coaster' with 'peaks and troughs'. He advised couples to 'put the kettle on' and talk through issues, acknowledging that people change over time.
