The tragic news that Hayden Panettiere, star of Heroes and Nashville, had died broke this morning. She was just 36 years old.
A statement from Panettiere's father, Skip Panettiere, was released to the press, which read: "It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her - and to the millions who watched her onscreen." However, the circumstances surrounding her death remain unclear.
Police were called to her home on Sunday August 16 after they responded to a report of an unresponsive woman at Judson Mill Lofts on Easley Bridge Road, South Carolina at 1:51 p.m. The 911 call was reportedly made by an unidentified acquaintance. Police confirmed the 36-year-old mum-of-one died at the scene as they told television station WYFF4 the preliminary investigation "has not indicated any signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances."
Other stars lost too soon
Sadly, Hayden is not the only star to die tragically young this year. We take a look back at some of the lives that have ended far too soon in 2026.
Theo Burrell, Antiques Roadshow star, has died aged 39. Her husband, Alex, confirmed the news in an Instagram post on July 11, as he heartbreakingly shared that her death came much quicker than anticipated following a cancer diagnosis. Her heartbroken partner shared a snap of her cuddling a dog as he wrote: "It is with great sadness that I share the news that Theo passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday afternoon. Neither she nor her medical team foresaw this happening quite so quickly. She was an incredible person who fought hard for her family, friends and raising awareness of this cruel disease." He went on: "She saw life events like her son's first day at school and her wedding that a little over 4 years ago we thought she'd never see."
Back in June, Theo shared that it had marked four years since she was diagnosed with glioblastoma - a malignant brain tumour. At the time, the BBC star shared that she had surpassed the prognosis handed to her by doctors at diagnosis, when she was given 12-18 months to live.
More tragic deaths in 2026
In January, former Nickelodeon child star Kianna Underwood was tragically killed by a hit-and-run driver who reportedly dragged her down a Brooklyn block. She was just 33. Her body was found with severe trauma, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. After the horror smash, investigators believe Underwood had left a bodega and crossed the road while ignoring the traffic light instructions.
Kianna wasn't the only All That star to die this year. Just last week, her co-star actress Christy Knowings died aged 46. According to TMZ, her family confirmed that the TV star died suddenly in Los Angeles. They said that Christy suffered an asthma attack on the Friday prior, which left her with brain damage. They ultimately decided to take her off life support a few days later. Her auntie also shared the news on Facebook, as she wrote: "My brother Charles' daughter Chrissy (Christy Knowings) has passed… She was a outstanding actress, comedian, twin sister, an amazing daughter….Rest in power Chrissy."
TOWIE star Jake Hall, 35, was tragically found by police at a Spanish holiday villa with fatal head wounds back in May. Officers said inquiries focused on the theory of a tragic accident where the 6ft 4ins reality television star smashed his head through a glass door in Majorca at a party. Just hours before his death, he shared a post with his Instagram followers showing him enjoying painting as well as the island's stunning scenery. He penned: "Life is b****ocks sometimes but I'm gonna try remember the good things – ️ looking through things – I'm just making art – in many forms."
