Top Gear stars James May and Jeremy Clarkson have expressed their disgust after England captain Harry Kane confirmed he played golf with former US President Donald Trump. The revelation, made by Kane during a press conference ahead of the World Cup quarter-final against Norway, sparked a strong reaction from the former Top Gear hosts.
James May and Jeremy Clarkson React
On July 11, 2026, James May took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his feelings, posting simply: "Ugh. Harry Kane plays golf." His former co-star Jeremy Clarkson quickly replied: "I know. I shivered too." The exchange drew immediate reactions from fans, with one commenting: "It's not the fact he's playing golf that's appalling, it's the company he's keeping while doing so..." Another quipped: "I'm guessing he declined Starmer's offer of 'Dinner for Two'?" A third added: "So Harry has a chink in his armour. Guess it's just an MBE for him then, not a knighthood..."
Kane Confirms Golf with Trump
Kane, who plays for Bayern Munich, confirmed the golf match took place in Palm Beach, Florida, around 18 months prior to the World Cup. He told reporters: "I played alright, to be honest. Yeah, we played about 18 months ago. He invited me to play when I was down in Palm Beach, so yeah, when the president invites you somewhere... it was a pretty surreal experience just to meet him and obviously play golf with him."
Kane also praised Trump's golfing skills, saying: "His golf's pretty good, to be honest with you. I hope I can play golf as good as him when I'm his age, that's for sure. So yeah, unique experience, but I was just grateful he invited me down to play."
Trump's Praise for Kane
Since the World Cup began, Trump has been vocal in his support for Kane on social media. Following Kane's victory against Mexico, Trump posted: "Harry Kane of England is a GREAT player!!!" The next day, he added: "I think Kane is a great player. I played golf with him, and I like him a lot. He's a good golfer. He's really great."
The connection between the England captain and the former US president has divided public opinion, with Top Gear stars clearly on the disapproving side.
