Tony Curtis has alleged in a new memoir that he had an affair with Marilyn Monroe during the filming of Some Like It Hot in 1958, resulting in a pregnancy that ended in miscarriage. The revelation comes decades after Curtis famously remarked that kissing Monroe was 'like kissing Hitler'.
In The Making of Some Like It Hot, due for publication in the US in September, Curtis, now 84, writes that the pair, who had a brief relationship in 1949, rekindled their romance on set. Both were married at the time—Curtis to Janet Leigh and Monroe to playwright Arthur Miller.
Curtis claims that Monroe broke the news of her pregnancy while they were confessing the affair to Miller. 'I was stunned,' Curtis writes. 'I just stood there. The room was so silent that I could hear tyres screeching on Santa Monica Boulevard.' He says he was told to finish the film and stay away from the couple, learning of the miscarriage only after filming ended.
Curtis's marriage to Leigh ended in 1962, and he is now on his fourth marriage. In 2002, he told Attitude magazine that upon arriving in Hollywood in 1948, he 'had more action than Mount Vesuvius; men, women, animals!'.
During a Guardian interview last year, Curtis explained the origin of his infamous 'kissing Hitler' remark, saying it was a response to a journalist's question. Monroe and Miller's marriage ended in 1961, a year before her death.
