The Office star Lucy Davis updates fans after cancer diagnosis

Lucy Davis, best known for playing Dawn Tinsley in the BBC comedy The Office, has shared an update with her followers two months after announcing her incurable breast cancer diagnosis.

Games night with friends

Posting on Instagram, Davis shared a mirror selfie taken during a games night with loved ones. She wrote: "A wonderful and much needed games night with good friends! We played ‘Celebrity’ which I was terrible at so I blamed my cancer (sic)".

She added: "The utterly beautiful dog in the picture is Charlie, and I’m looking after him for a few weeks which is a gift! Thank you guys for coming! Love you all".

She posed alongside American stars Rebecca Metz and Sam Pancake, as fans and friends flooded the comments with love and support.

Diagnosis revealed in August

On August 11, Davis revealed on Instagram that she had been diagnosed with stage four breast cancer around a year and a half ago. The 53-year-old explained that the cancer had metastasised to her bones, including her spine, right hip and ribs.

She also said it was "too late" for chemotherapy, sharing a heartfelt message: "Hi friends, I wanted to share something with you all that I’ve kept to myself for a while but for various reasons would like to share now.

"A year and a half ago I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Breast Cancer, which has metastasised to my bones. Specifically to my spine, right hip, and my ribs. The cancer is incurable, and too late for chemo.

"The initial lump that I felt, wasn’t a ‘lump’ as such; rather a kind of hard spot. Really tiny. I almost didn’t bother getting it checked. So I guess I’m saying don’t ignore anything - get everything checked out."

Career and life outlook

Davis rose to fame as Dawn Tinsley in The Office, which ran for two seasons and two Christmas specials, starring alongside Ricky Gervais, Martin Freeman and Mackenzie Crook. Her character's will-they-won't-they romance with Tim, played by Freeman, remains a talking point among fans.

After The Office, she appeared in Wonder Woman, Shaun of the Dead and Netflix's Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, in which she played Hilda Spellman.

Describing how she is approaching life after the diagnosis, Davis said: "As of now, I’m trying to live out whatever might be left of my life in as fun a way as I possibly can. I always like to find the teachable moments in anything negative that happens. And cancer has not disappointed in that regard; there’s a lot I have learned from it, and I’m grateful for that.

"As some of you will know, the pain can really be something else. Standing and walking for too long a time can be hard, and I need to use a wheelchair sometimes (so if you see me toddling around in one, feel free to give me a push!)"
