Record-Breaking Debut for The Odyssey
The Odyssey, Sir Christopher Nolan's adaptation of Homer's ancient Greek epic, has set a new personal record for the director with a global box office debut of $264 million (£196 million), according to Universal Pictures. Released on Friday, the film outperformed Nolan's 2023 blockbuster Oppenheimer and marked his best opening since 2012's The Dark Knight Rises.
Star-Studded Cast and International Success
The blockbuster stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, and Zendaya, alongside Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Samantha Morton, and Charlize Theron. The UK and Ireland led international markets with $17.4 million (£12.9 million) over three days, the highest for any country. Screenings at the BFI IMAX cinema in London were sold out for the opening weekend, with fans queuing from midnight and 4am.
Wide Release and Technical Milestone
The Odyssey was rolled out across 73 markets, launching on more than 12,800 locations and 26,000 screens, including 440 IMAX screens. It is the first feature film shot entirely with IMAX cameras, which capture sharper, brighter, and higher-resolution content. The film has received glowing reviews, with some calling it Nolan's "best film to date."
Nolan, known for The Dark Knight trilogy, Interstellar, Dunkirk, Memento, Inception, and Tenet, continues to push cinematic boundaries with this epic adaptation.
