Taylor Swift has clarified the meaning behind her new song 'Actually Romantic' from her album 'The Life of a Showgirl', describing it as a 'love letter to someone who hates you'. The track has sparked fan speculation over its subject, with names like Charli XCX and Kim Kardashian being suggested.
In an interview, Swift explained: 'It's sort of like you just, sometimes you don't know that you're a part of someone else's story but you are. And then kind of there can be this moment where it's unveiled to you through things they do that are very overt.' She added that she now finds such attention flattering, stating: 'In my industry attention is affection and you give me a whole lot of it.'
Fans have pointed to lyrics such as 'High-fived my ex and then you said you're glad he ghosted me / Wrote me a song saying it makes you sick to see my face' as potential references to Charli XCX's track 'Sympathy is a Knife', which many believe was about Swift. The song also includes the line 'But you keep sending me fun', which some interpret as a nod to Kim Kardashian's past Valentine's Day gesture.
Swift previously praised Charli XCX in a 2024 interview with New York Magazine, saying: 'I’ve been blown away by Charli’s melodic sensibilities... Her writing is surreal and inventive, always.' Despite this, listeners continue to debate the inspiration behind 'Actually Romantic'.
