Talia Mar's 'Relief' After Autism Diagnosis and Navigating Motherhood
Singer and social media star Talia Mar has candidly discussed the profound relief she felt after receiving an autism diagnosis at age 25. In an exclusive interview, she revealed how this late diagnosis has transformed her self-understanding and alleviated years of self-blame for finding certain challenges more difficult than others.
Breaking Down Misconceptions About Autism
Talia initially sought assessment for ADHD before confirming her autism diagnosis in July 2024. She expressed frustration with common misconceptions, particularly the phrase "you don't look autistic," which she described as nonsensical since autism isn't a physical condition. "It was so relieving and so nice to be able to speak openly about it," Talia explained. "Actually coming out and talking about it properly, people were like 'Oh, you weren't just saying that for a fun little thing.'"
She emphasized how the diagnosis has helped others understand her intense focus and passionate approach to topics. "They understand why and where it comes from and why I get so into things and so obsessed and so tunnel vision," she said. Talia also noted that her mother has reflected on her childhood, recognizing signs that went undiagnosed in an era of limited awareness.
Independent Music Career and Creative Freedom
Today marks the release of Talia's latest single, "Suit and Tie," an emotional track she describes as stemming from hurt over a friendship, though listeners might interpret it romantically. Since leaving her label RCA Records and Sony Music Entertainment in 2023, Talia has embraced working independently. "I finally just want to release music that is truly what I want to talk about," she said, acknowledging both the scariness and refreshment of this creative freedom.
She directs and edits her own music videos, collaborating with trusted friends, and values the authenticity this brings compared to what she calls "manufactured" material. Talia believes social media has fueled both manufactured music and independent artistry, allowing artists to create more authentic work. Despite industry changes, she maintains her content style, recently returning to vlogging similar to her approach a decade ago.
Juggling Motherhood with a Demanding Career
Beyond music, Talia navigates motherhood after welcoming daughter Juni Angèle Minter-Mar with husband Simon Minter (Miniminter). She describes parenting as "one of the most incredible things, but maybe the hardest things I've ever done." Talia and Simon coordinate their schedules—he's also a content creator—to ensure one parent is always available for Juni.
"It is a whirlwind," Talia admitted, noting the rapid developmental changes in infants. She chose not to take extended maternity leave due to her passion for her career, aiming to maintain her own identity alongside parenting. "As much as I want to spend time with Juni, I really want to have my own career and things that I do away from her," she explained.
Looking Ahead to Live Performances and New Projects
Talia hopes to return to live performances soon and potentially release a larger project, possibly an album, by year's end. Having spent a decade in the industry, she's learned that "being a control freak is ok," rejecting negative connotations of control when it means having a say in her career direction.
Reflecting on industry diversity, she praised events like the BRITs for showcasing niche artists and broadening musical horizons. Talia's journey—from autism diagnosis to independent artistry and motherhood—illustrates her resilience and commitment to authenticity in all aspects of her life.
