Stop! That! Train! Review: Drag Queen Comedy Is the Best Since Airplane!
Stop! That! Train! Review: Best Comedy Since Airplane!

Stop! That! Train!, a new spoof disaster movie starring RuPaul and a host of drag queens, has been hailed as a contender for the best movie of the year, despite being almost too silly. The film is being compared to the 1980 parody Airplane! and is described as the best comedy since that classic.

A Train Full of Drag Queens

The movie follows lowly Stank Train workers DeeDee (Jujubee) and Tess (Ginger Minj), who are lamenting their recent redundancy. They are in luck when a last-minute snafu means high-end luxury trainline, the Glamazonian Express, needs two replacements, and soon they are shoved into their uniforms and on board.

Once there, they encounter their train school enemy Amber (Brook Lynn Hytes) and her posse (Marcia Marcia Marcia and Symone), who rule first class, while others serve the poor sods stuck in economy. Everything is thrown into chaos when the train loses its brakes and is on a one-way track straight into the heart of a stormaganza.

Star-Studded Cast and Performances

RuPaul puts in an admirable effort as a US President wracked with train PTSD. The movie features guest stars Jesse Tyler Ferguson as an uptight businessman uninterested in the beauty of childbirth, Sarah Michelle Gellar as a washed-out actress who no one actually knows, and Missi Pyle as a drunkard desperate for a bang – all putting in an A-star effort.

RuPaul is the President of the USA, and the drag icon Judy Gagwell delivers lines that might not be questioned if said by the current US President, such as: 'There's a saying in politics, the only thing worse than a train crash is a flattened exploded toddler.'

Verdict: A Hoot Despite Some Flaws

The film may not quite justify a feature-length movie, but viewers are guaranteed to have a hoot. In another universe, this could have been a snappy one-episode special. Not all the jokes landed, while others were repeated one too many times to make a lasting impression.

If you're looking for a movie where a bunch of drag queens try and almost fail to stop that train, then you've hit the jackpot. Stop! That! Train! is out in UK cinemas now.
