The four-part BBC crime drama Steeltown Murders, based on the real-life murders committed by Joseph Kappen in Port Talbot, South Wales, has been praised as an 'outstanding and authentic' hidden gem. The series, which won a BAFTA Cymru Award for Best Television Drama, is available to stream for free on BBC iPlayer.
Plot and Production
The miniseries, created by Ed Whitmore and directed by Marc Evans, follows the investigation into three unsolved murders from the 1970s that haunted the community of Port Talbot. Decades later, DCI Bethall reopens the case, determined to find the serial killer. The official synopsis states: 'Three murders - unsolved but never forgotten. Thirty years on, can DCI Bethall find the serial killer who terrorised 1970s Port Talbot?'
Production began in November 2022 on location across South Wales. Paul Bethell, the actual detective from the original case, was closely involved in the show's development. Philip Glenister, who plays the older version of the detective, stated that he felt it was his 'responsibility' to portray the story accurately for the grieving families.
Cast and Awards
Alongside Glenister, the cast includes Steffan Rhodri, Keith Allen, Sharon Morgan, Karen Paullada, Richard Harrington, and Nia Roberts. The series received five BAFTA Cymru Award nominations, including Best Actor for Glenister and Best Director for Marc Evans. It won the top accolade for Best Television Drama and also took home the Best Costume Design award.
Critical and Audience Reception
Critics have lauded the series for its authenticity and emotional depth. One reviewer noted: 'This is not usually the stuff of crime thrillers, but here it adds up to nerve-wracking moments.' Another said: 'It's a moving and engrossing case, and writer Ed Whitmore powerfully evokes both the horror of the crimes and the reluctance of the community to reopen the wounds.' A third critic described it as 'a respectful, even affectionate piece of work that maps the toll of an unsolved murder on the people in pain left behind.'
Audiences have also been highly impressed. One viewer wrote on IMDb: 'This is a fantastic four part series from the BBC. Being from the area myself, I can confirm that this case did indeed cast a big shadow over the whole area.' Another said: 'Wonderfully authentic. It makes the viewer sit up and pay attention. Really good performances from everyone, especially Glenister and the actor who played his younger character.' A third fan commented: 'Outstanding multidimensional true crime. This mini-series has extraordinary depth. It shows realistically how the lives of all those affected were, in different ways, unable to move on.'
