Sophie Habboo Reveals Wedding Anxiety Led to ADHD Diagnosis
Sophie Habboo: Wedding Anxiety Led to ADHD Discovery

Sophie Habboo's Wedding Anxiety Sparked ADHD Diagnosis Journey

Television personality Sophie Habboo has candidly discussed the profound 'sadness' she experiences when reflecting on her 2023 wedding to Jamie Laing, attributing these feelings to intense anxiety that ultimately led to a life-changing ADHD diagnosis. The 31-year-old former Made In Chelsea star revealed that what was meant to be a joyous celebration became an overwhelming ordeal, prompting a therapeutic journey that uncovered her neurodivergent condition.

Dream Wedding Versus Reality

Sophie confessed she had always envisioned an intimate beach ceremony with just twenty guests, describing her ideal as "getting married with my feet in the sand." However, the reality became a 250-guest extravaganza in Sotogrande, Spain, driven largely by her husband's vision of a "huge big white wedding." This disconnect between her private nature and the public spectacle triggered significant distress.

"I was incredibly overwhelmed, which then caused me to have massive anxiety," Sophie explained during an appearance on Elizabeth Day's How To Fail podcast. "Everyone was saying this is what everyone dreams of. We've grown up thinking women want this big white wedding."

The Spiral of Unspoken Struggle

The pressure mounted as the wedding gained public attention through their podcast, creating what Sophie described as "a big spectacle" that exacerbated her imposter syndrome. She found herself questioning why she couldn't cope with the excitement surrounding what others perceived as a dream wedding.

"I was looking around thinking everyone is so excited for me... why am I not able to cope with this?" she recalled. This internal conflict led her to seek therapy, where a professional recognized symptoms consistent with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and recommended testing.

ADHD Diagnosis Brings Clarity

The assessment confirmed Sophie has ADHD, providing crucial context for her struggles with the wedding's overwhelming nature. "Low and behold, I have ADHD," she shared. "Now I know I have it, it makes a lot of sense." She expressed regret about not receiving an earlier diagnosis, believing it would have helped her understand and show more compassion toward herself during that challenging period.

Sophie emphasized that while ADHD has become a buzzword, her personal experience with diagnosis has been transformative. "Having gone through what I've gone through, everyone handles it differently," she noted, acknowledging the condition's complexity.

Looking Back With Compassion

Reflecting on her wedding day, Sophie described mixed emotions: "It's really sad for me to look back at our wedding. In so many ways it was the best day of my life and I should have enjoyed it so much. But I was just really struggling." She admitted she never voiced her desire for a smaller ceremony, which intensified her anxiety spiral.

The diagnosis has allowed her to develop compassion for her younger self. "I feel compassion, but that's only been since I got diagnosed and I unpacked it," she explained. This understanding has inspired thoughts of renewing her vows in a style that aligns with her original vision, though she humorously noted her husband might still try to make it "a huge thing."

Life After Diagnosis

Two years after their wedding, Sophie and Jamie welcomed their son Ziggy and recently released a Disney+ series, Raising Chelsea, documenting their journey into parenthood. Sophie revealed the series captures raw moments, including explosive rows as they navigated new responsibilities while renovating their home.

"It was constant, nearly a breakdown every day," she admitted about balancing parenthood, work, and home renovations. Her openness about mental health challenges continues to resonate, offering insight into the often-hidden struggles behind public celebrations.
