Helen Skelton has directly confronted persistent speculation regarding a potential romantic involvement with her Morning Live co-presenter Gethin Jones. The television personality, who separated from her husband Richie Myler in 2022, has categorically denied the rumours that have circulated following several high-profile public appearances alongside Jones.
"We Are Just Work Friends"
In a recent interview with The Mirror, Skelton provided unequivocal clarification about the nature of her relationship with Jones. "We just work together, we are not together," she stated emphatically. The presenter reinforced this position by adding: "No, no, no. We are just work friends."
The co-hosts have maintained a professional relationship spanning an impressive twenty-five years, having first crossed paths during their respective tenures on the iconic children's programme Blue Peter. Jones hosted the show from 2005 to 2008, with Skelton joining the series approximately six months after his departure.
Longstanding Professional Relationship
Speaking to Prima magazine, Skelton elaborated on the dynamics of their working relationship, which also includes fellow presenter Michelle Ackerley. "I've been friends with Michelle and Gethin for 25 years," she revealed. "Geth was on Blue Peter before me, so we've always crossed paths, and Michelle and I were flatmates when we lived in London."
The presenter explained that their deep familiarity occasionally creates challenges during live broadcasts. "We're all in the same frame of mind," she continued. "The tricky bit is, we're such good mates that sometimes we forget we're on air."
Personal Life and Priorities
Skelton's personal circumstances have undergone significant changes in recent years. She announced her separation from rugby league player Richie Myler in 2022, stating at the time: "Very sad to say that Richie and I are no longer a couple. He has left the family home. We will be doing our best to co-parent our small children."
The couple share three children: Ernie, aged ten, Louis, eight, and Elsie, three. Reflecting on life following the separation, Skelton emphasised that her children's wellbeing remains her paramount concern. "That's all ultimately that matters," she said regarding their happiness.
Career Decisions and Personal Growth
In the aftermath of her separation, Skelton made several significant career choices. She participated in Strictly Come Dancing months after the split, explaining that "sometimes you just need to jump on the opportunity and chance to put a big smile on your face." She finished as runner-up to wildlife presenter Hamza Yassin in the competition.
More recently, in August 2023, Skelton made the decision to step down from her Sunday slot on BBC Radio 5 Live. This career move was motivated by her desire to dedicate more time to her three children, demonstrating her commitment to balancing professional responsibilities with family life.
Skelton has maintained a philosophical perspective regarding her personal circumstances. "I don't see myself as a victim," she reflected. "There are a lot of people who have been in my situation who haven't been given the opportunities that I've got. Don't get me wrong, I have my days when I'm pissed off. But equally, in this job, you're in a lot of people's lives, which gives you a phenomenal amount of perspective."
Addressing the persistent rumours about her relationship with Jones once more, Skelton concluded: "I see my work friends as much as I do my real friends," effectively dismissing any suggestion of romantic involvement between the long-time professional collaborators.
