Serena Williams has shared her fitness journey on social media, showcasing a remarkable body transformation ahead of her return to competitive tennis. The 44-year-old tennis icon is set to compete in a doubles match at Queen's Club on Tuesday, marking her first competitive action since the 2022 US Open.
Comeback at Queen's Club
The 23-time Grand Slam winner will partner 19-year-old Victoria Mboko as a wildcard duo at the Andy Murray Arena. They have been drawn against third seeds Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe. Williams retired after her 2022 US Open exit and gave birth to her second child in August 2023, but she remained determined to stay in top shape.
Fitness Journey on Social Media
Williams shared updates on social media last year, cutting a leaner figure than in her playing days. In January 2024, she expressed her motivation to get fit in an Instagram Reel: "Alright, I'm getting back into the swing of things. This is not my usual weight, but it'll do until I get back to where I need to be." In July 2025, she showed off her abs in an Instagram post while working out, captioning it: "Working out and working on my angles."
Anti-Doping Testing Pool
Later that year, it was reported that Williams had re-entered the anti-doping testing pool. All players must complete a mandatory six-month period within the testing pool before being allowed to compete.
Wildcard Acceptance
It was announced earlier this month that Williams had accepted a wildcard to play alongside world No. 9 Mboko at Queen's. The 44-year-old won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles during her career. "Queen's Club feels like the perfect place to begin this next chapter," Williams said. "Grass has given me some of the most meaningful moments of my career, and I'm excited to be back competing on one of the sport's most iconic stages."
Speculation of Wimbledon Return
The timing of her return has sparked speculation of a possible return to Wimbledon. While wildcards for the major will be announced next week, Williams has shared her reasons for getting back into the sport. "This whole journey is no pressure, I've had enough pressure, it's about so many elements," Williams said. "My kids getting to see me play, Olympia is older, an athlete is the best thing you can be in the highest place. Having an opportunity to do that one last time is exciting."
