Sandra Bullock Opens Up About Bryan Randall's 'Traumatic' ALS Diagnosis
Sandra Bullock on Bryan Randall's 'Traumatic' ALS Diagnosis

Sandra Bullock has opened up about her partner Bryan Randall's diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), describing the news as 'traumatic' and revealing she was unable to speak about it at the time.

The actress, 62, met Randall, a former model turned photographer, in 2015 after hiring him to photograph her son's fifth birthday party. He was diagnosed with ALS in 2020.

'Traumatic' Diagnosis

ALS is a progressive nervous system disease in which the brain gradually loses its connection with the muscles, slowly taking away a person's ability to walk, talk, eat and eventually breathe. Randall died in 2023 at the age of 57 after a three-year battle with the illness.

Speaking on the SmartLess podcast, Bullock told hosts Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes: 'I wasn't allowed to speak about it. That was the request and I tried – I honoured it.' She added: 'I know why he asked me not [to].'

Isolation and Grief

The Miss Congeniality star said the diagnosis was 'traumatic' and a 'huge weight' to carry, leaving her isolated during the Covid-19 pandemic. She revealed she had been 'grieving' Randall before he died, given he was 'ill for half of our relationship'.

'My person left a lot earlier than the body left. I don't think I ever dealt with that until after he passed, because you're just on this treadmill,' she said. 'You have to quietly plan. And I'm a very good planner with illness. It doesn't scare me – not the illness itself, it doesn't scare me.'

'I can see and be around just about anything. But I had two young kids that were navigating it, especially a little girl who saw Bryan as a father figure.'

Support from Friends

Bullock said she initially told herself, 'Oh, I can handle that. I can be quiet,' but caring for Randall while raising two young children during the pandemic became a 'trifecta that was pretty dark'.

She eventually opened up to close friends Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman's wife, Amanda. Bullock added that although the ordeal was traumatising, having been through her mother's cancer and father's accidents had prepared her for Randall's diagnosis.

Bullock and Randall co-parented her son Louis, daughter Laila, and his daughter from a previous relationship, Skylar Staten Randall.

Increased Public Attention on ALS

ALS has received increased public attention in recent years following a number of high-profile diagnoses and deaths. Grey's Anatomy star Eric Dane died earlier this year from the disease after what his family called 'a courageous battle with ALS'. Dane spent the months before his death raising awareness of the condition, even playing a firefighter with ALS on NBC's Brilliant Minds.

In May, veteran actor Russell Andrews, who appeared in shows like Better Call Saul and Grey's Anatomy, also shared his diagnosis with ALS. Speaking via the ALS network, he said: 'Receiving this diagnosis changed my life. What I didn't expect was the depth of connection and support that comes with it. There's a community here that shows up in ways that matter.'
