Sam Neill, the versatile New Zealand actor whose career spanned Oscar winners and blockbusters such as The Piano and Jurassic Park, has died aged 78 in Sydney, Australia. His death was announced on Monday via a statement shared on his Instagram account. No cause of death was given, but Neill had only recently revealed he was cancer-free after being diagnosed with stage 3 angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a type of blood cancer, in 2022.
“It is with immense sadness that the whānau of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in Sydney Australia. Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life,” the post read. “The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free. They would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their incredible care.” The family requested privacy as they navigate this immeasurable loss.
Career Highlights
Neill was born in Northern Ireland and raised in New Zealand. He gained international fame for his role as Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park (1993) and starred in Jane Campion’s The Piano (1993), which won the Palme d’Or. His filmography also includes My Brilliant Career (1979), Dead Calm (1989), The Hunt for Red October (1990), and In the Mouth of Madness (1994). On television, he appeared in series such as The Tudors and Peaky Blinders.
Health Battle
In 2022, Neill was diagnosed with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare and aggressive blood cancer. He underwent chemotherapy and later revealed in his 2023 memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This?, that he was in remission. In an interview with the Guardian earlier this year, he said, “I’m not afraid of dying, but I’d be annoyed. I’ve got so much more to do.” At the time of his death, he was cancer-free.
Tributes
Tributes poured in from colleagues and fans. New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins called Neill “a national treasure” whose “contributions to film and television will be remembered forever.” Australian actor Cate Blanchett, who starred with Neill in The Piano, said he was “a magnificent actor and a deeply kind man.” The family’s statement concluded: “More details will be shared later, but for now, on behalf of the family, we ask that you respect their privacy.”
