Liverpool are navigating a turbulent summer as they adapt to life under new manager Andoni Iraola, who took over after the sacking of Arne Slot. The club is also facing the departure of star forward Mohamed Salah, who announced his exit at the end of last season after nine years at Anfield.
Salah's Departure Confirmed
Former Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has stated that Salah will not reverse his decision to leave the club. Speaking to WinWin, Lovren said: "No, it's over. Mo has a big personality too. I don't know, if they hadn't announced all of that, all the details of leaving, saying thank you and goodbye and saying goodbye, maybe yes, but now it's difficult."
However, Lovren suggested that Salah might have stayed if he had known Slot would be leaving earlier. "Yes, he would have stayed 100%. Believe me, he would have stayed 100%, I know that. But the timing was bad," he added.
Lovren's Praise for Salah
Lovren also emphasized Salah's enduring quality: "Only a fool would say we no longer need him. Only a fool would say that. I mean, to say you don't need Mohamed Salah at Liverpool, when he can still perform at the highest level for another two or three years, then we have a problem understanding football."
Darwin Nunez Rumoured for Return
Meanwhile, former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez is reportedly eager for a return to the club. The Uruguayan moved to Al-Hilal for £46.3 million in 2025 but has struggled in Saudi Arabia. According to Mundo Deportivo, Nunez would welcome a Merseyside comeback, though Chelsea, Barcelona, and Newcastle United are also potential destinations.
Nunez scored 40 goals in 143 appearances for Liverpool after joining from Benfica in 2022 for an initial £64 million. Upon his departure, he said: "Liverpool will always be part of who I am. I'll miss you more than words can say."
