Sacha Baron Cohen is planning to bring back his iconic character Ali G for a new stand-up tour, according to reports confirmed by BBC News. The spoof wannabe gangster first rose to fame 25 years ago through prank interviews with unsuspecting experts on his TV show in the early 2000s.
Ali G later starred in his own film and has made occasional appearances in recent years. Variety reported that Baron Cohen has been working on a stand-up tour featuring the character, though no further details have been released.
In 2021, Baron Cohen revived Ali G for a sketch at the MTV Movie & TV Awards and a one-off routine at a Sydney comedy club. He told GQ magazine: 'I just wanted to get on stage and muck around and see what Ali G would be like with a crowd. It was really good fun.'
Ali G's early success came from duping interviewees while lampooning white suburbanites posing as urban youth. However, the act faced criticism for allegedly adopting and ridiculing black street culture. Baron Cohen, now 51, also gained fame with similar prank characters Borat and Bruno.
