Rosamund Pike, star of the acclaimed thriller Gone Girl, has spoken openly about marriage in recent interviews, suggesting that women often have unrealistic expectations of their spouses. However, her own romantic history is far from straightforward, marked by two broken engagements and a current relationship with a former heroin addict 18 years her senior.
Pike's first serious love was actor Simon Woods, whom she met at Oxford University. After two years together, Woods revealed he was questioning his sexuality, and they parted ways. He later entered a civil partnership with Burberry's creative director Christopher Bailey. Pike, demonstrating good grace, sent them her best wishes.
Her second engagement was to director Joe Wright, whom she met on set. The relationship ended abruptly after Pike sent out 'save the date' cards featuring a picture of the couple in a hot tub, which Wright found appalling. He summarily ended the engagement, leaving Pike publicly humiliated.
Now 35, Pike shares her life with Robie Uniacke, an Old Etonian and former City businessman who battled heroin addiction. Despite being 18 years older, twice divorced, and father to four children, Uniacke has been with Pike since 2010. They have a two-year-old son, Solo, and are expecting their second child.
Pike's reflections on marriage, drawn from her own experiences, challenge the notion that one person can fulfil all needs. She points to her grandmother's era, where husbands were not expected to meet every emotional requirement. Her current relationship, though unconventional, appears to bring her happiness outside the institution of marriage.
