Roman Dixon: 'Always be proud' - Everton defender farewell

Roman Dixon has bid an emotional farewell to Everton after the club confirmed his release this summer. The 21-year-old right-back, who rose through the academy to make his Premier League debut under Sean Dyche, posted a heartfelt message on Instagram: “After 10 unforgettable years, the time has come to move on. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey, the staff, coaches, medical team, my teammates, and especially the fans. Your support has never gone unnoticed. It’s been an incredible chapter that I’ll always be proud of.”

From Finch Farm to the Premier League

Dixon joined Everton at age 11 and progressed through the ranks at Finch Farm. His big break came in the 2024/25 season when injuries to Nathan Patterson and Seamus Coleman, combined with Ashley Young’s red card on the opening day, left Dyche short of options. The manager handed Dixon his Premier League start at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, though Everton lost 4-0. He later made a substitute appearance in the Carabao Cup win over Doncaster Rovers.

Injury setbacks and loan spell

The former England Under-20 international’s progress was hampered by injuries. A serious injury delayed a planned loan to Stockport County at the start of last season. He eventually joined Stockport in January, making seven appearances as the club reached the League Two play-off final, losing to Bolton Wanderers. Everton confirmed earlier this month that Dixon would not be offered a new contract.

Other academy departures

Dixon is one of several promising youngsters leaving the club this summer. Tyler Onyango and Reece Welch, who also made first-team appearances, are among those released. Striker Frankie Okoronkwo, a high-profile signing from Sunderland at age 16, has joined League One side Doncaster Rovers on a two-year deal after a loan spell there ended with a season-ending hamstring injury.
