Margot Robbie has candidly discussed the intense professional bond she formed with her co-star Jacob Elordi during the production of their upcoming cinematic adaptation of Emily Brontë's classic novel, Wuthering Heights. In a revealing cast interview with Fandango, the acclaimed actress described developing what she termed a "co-dependent" relationship with Elordi, portraying the iconic roles of Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff respectively.
An Unbreakable On-Set Connection
The Barbie star elaborated on her tendency to form deep attachments with colleagues during filming projects. "I'm so codependent with people I work with, and I love everyone so much," Robbie confessed. "I'm always that person who's so devastated when a job's over and I never want it to end. I think I developed that quite quickly with Jacob, too."
Constant Presence and Mutual Observation
Robbie recalled specific moments during early filming days when Elordi maintained a persistent physical proximity, whether required for scenes or not. "I remember the first couple days on set, he would just be always in the vicinity where I was, but like in a corner, watching Cathy," she revealed, referencing her character Catherine.
Director Emerald Fennell humorously interjected during the interview, clarifying that Elordi's constant presence wasn't her instruction. "I didn't tell him to do that," Fennell stated. "I actually had to ask him to leave."
Feeling 'Lost' Without Familiar Presence
The Suicide Squad actress explained how she became so accustomed to Elordi's watchful presence that his absence became disconcerting. "I felt quite lost, like a kid without their blanket or something," Robbie admitted, describing being "unnerved" when she discovered he wasn't observing her during certain moments.
A 'Mutual Obsession' Between Co-Stars
Elordi reciprocated these sentiments, describing their connection as a "mutual obsession" that enhanced their performances. "If you have the opportunity to share a film set with Margot Robbie, you're going to make sure you're within 5 to 10 meters at all times, watching how she drinks tea, how she eats her food," the Saltburn actor explained. "She's just like an elite actor."
Addressing Casting Controversy
These intimate revelations about their working relationship follow Robbie's recent defence of Elordi's casting as Heathcliff, a character originally described with dark features and believed to have Romani heritage. Despite some fan disapproval, Robbie expressed understanding while encouraging audiences to reserve judgment.
"I get it, there's nothing else to go off at this point until people see the movie," she told British Vogue last month, confidently adding that viewers would "be happy" with the final result.
Anticipated Release of Gothic Romance
The film adaptation, directed by Emerald Fennell, transports audiences to rural Yorkshire circa 1770, exploring the tumultuous relationships between the Earnshaw and Linton families with particular focus on the passionate, destructive bond between Catherine and Heathcliff. Wuthering Heights is scheduled for theatrical release on February 13, promising a fresh interpretation of Brontë's enduring Gothic masterpiece.
