Quadruple killer Robert Maudsley, 73, has given his first interview in almost 50 years, speaking to the Daily Mirror from his high security prison cell at Whitemoor in Cambridgeshire. Maudsley, who earned the nickname 'Hannibal the Cannibal', was transferred there from Wakefield jail in April 2025.
Maudsley's crime spree and nickname
Maudsley killed two men on the same day during his crime spree, which took place between 1974 and 1978. He earned his nickname after killing a fellow inmate at Wakefield in 1977, with rumours that he ate his brain with a spoon. A post-mortem proved that claim untrue.
Maudsley admits similarities exist between his life and that of the fictional killer Hannibal Lecter in the 1991 film 'The Silence of the Lambs', for which Anthony Hopkins won an Oscar.
Life in prison and love
In a wide-ranging, hour-long conversation, recorded and published by the Mirror, Maudsley spoke about his life behind bars, how he found love for the first time with his partner Loveinia MacKenney, and why he believes he should be locked up for life.
