A man who sent hundreds of abusive tweets, including death threats to Countdown presenter Rachel Riley, has been ordered not to contact her or Coldplay singer Chris Martin for five years. Anthony Wells, from Chelmsford, Essex, admitted harassing Riley over a seven-month period.
The Crown Prosecution Service said Martin chose not to pursue charges after Wells pleaded guilty to the offence against Riley. Basildon Crown Court sentenced Wells to a hospital order under the Mental Health Act, alongside the restraining order.
Prosecutor Punam Malhan stated that Martin accepted the plea involving Riley to ensure Wells received necessary medical help. Malhan emphasised that everyone should be able to live free from harassment caused by deliberately offensive and violent messages on social media.
