Dame Prue Leith, the Great British Bake Off star, has revealed how Queen Elizabeth II exacted a form of 'revenge' after an embarrassing mistake decades ago. Speaking on the Making A Scene podcast, the 85-year-old recalled a mishap while serving tea to the late monarch over 50 years ago.
Dame Prue explained that she had called Buckingham Palace ahead of the event to learn how the Queen liked her tea, but was told to prepare a tray of options. When the moment came, she added a slice of lemon to the Queen's black tea and made it too weak by adding too much water. The Queen reportedly said, 'I like it strong,' leaving Dame Prue with a lemony, weak brew.
Reflecting on the incident, Dame Prue joked that the Queen got her own back by waiting 50 years to award her a damehood. She was made an OBE in 1989 and a CBE in 2010, before receiving the highest royal honour in 2021 for services to food, broadcasting, and charity.
Dame Prue continues to co-judge The Great British Bake Off alongside Paul Hollywood, with the current series airing on Channel 4.
