Prince Harry made a guest appearance on James Corden's Fox Sports programme After Hours over the weekend to discuss the World Cup final. During the show, the Duke of Sussex became animated when Corden repeatedly referred to the sport as 'soccer', the term commonly used in the United States.
Harry Corrects Corden on 'Soccer' vs 'Football'
Corden asked Harry: "So are you a fan of soccer?" and added, "I always thought you were too posh to go to a school where they played soccer." Harry quickly responded: "Too posh to play football, you mean. Why do you keep calling it soccer?" Corden replied: "Because we're in the United States, baby." Despite his excuse, Corden used the term 'football' for most of the remainder of their conversation.
Harry's Own Use of 'Soccer'
Ironically, just two weeks earlier, Harry himself used the word 'soccer' during a public appearance. While in Birmingham, UK, for the one-year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games, he spoke with ITV host Alison Hammond. When she invited him to her home for ackee and saltfish, Harry enthusiastically replied: "And some soccer as well?" He quickly corrected himself: "Some football, sorry. Football, not soccer."
Ranking the Greatest British Harrys
Later in the interview, Corden asked Harry to rank famous Englishmen who share his name: Harry Kane, Harry Styles, and Harry Potter. After deliberation, Harry placed Harry Styles first, Harry Kane second, and put himself and Harry Potter in joint third, joking they would "have a Quidditch-off." He also revealed that while he played football at prep school on the first team, he was demoted to the E team at his larger secondary school, saying: "Big A team, down to E team. So that didn't feel very good."
