The Prince and Princess of Wales have confirmed that their eldest son, Prince George, will attend Eton College starting in September. The announcement ends months of speculation about the 13-year-old's secondary education.
A New Chapter for Prince George
Prince George, who turns 13 in July, is currently in his final term at Lambrook School, which he has attended since September 2022. After the summer holidays, he will begin at Eton College, a prestigious boarding school located a 12-minute drive from the family's Forest Lodge home. The school, which costs £63,000 per year, was also attended by his father, Prince William, and his uncle, Prince Harry, as well as 20 former Prime Ministers.
A statement from Kensington Palace said: "Kensington Palace can confirm that Prince George will attend Eton College from September."
Impact on the Family
The change will be significant not only for George but also for his siblings, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, who have attended Lambrook alongside him for the past four years. They will remain at Lambrook without him when the new school year begins. This will also mark the first time the future King will board full-time, after his father recently revealed that George often boards on a part-time basis.
Speculation and Other Options
The announcement follows months of speculation about which school George would attend. Other contenders included his mother's alma mater, Marlborough College, and Oundle School in Northamptonshire, which William and Kate were reportedly seen touring.
William's Eton Experience
Prince William attended Eton between 1995 and 2000, boarding at Manor House. He arrived for his first day with his parents, King Charles III, the late Princess Diana, and Prince Harry. William became the most senior royal to attend the school, though other royals such as the Duke of Kent, Prince Michael of Kent, and the Duke of Gloucester were also educated there. He left with 12 GCSEs and three A-levels, earning a place at St Andrews University, where he met his future wife.
Royal expert Jennie Bond noted that George's experience at Eton may differ from his father's. She told the Mirror: "When William was 13, he began his secondary education at Eton College. Both his parents were at his side but, by then, they were officially separated. Things are very different for George, who has been brought up in a household full of love and harmony."
Background on Prince George
Prince George was born on July 22, 2013, at the Lindo Wing of St Mary's Hospital in London, weighing 8lb 6oz. He was christened George Alexander Louis at the Chapel Royal at St James' Palace, with godparents including Zara Tindall, the Duke of Westminster, and Julia Samuel.
