An 81-year-old man has been charged with the murder of an 81-year-old woman who was found fatally stabbed in her home in Coleraine, Victoria. Police discovered the woman with fatal injuries at a house on Pilleau Street shortly after 1am on Saturday, and she died at the scene. The accused, known to the victim, was arrested and charged on Saturday evening. He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Warrnambool Magistrates Court on Monday.
In a separate incident, a man in his 20s is fighting for his life after being stabbed inside an Airbnb in Mays Hill, Sydney's west. Emergency crews were called to a residential unit on Patricia Street in the early hours of Saturday following reports of serious injuries. The man was treated at the scene for a life-threatening knife wound to the torso and taken to Westmead Hospital. A second man, also in his 20s, was found nearby with a wound to his arm and is under police guard at the same hospital.
Police believe the fight between the two men broke out inside the Airbnb while eight other people were present. Both men were known to each other. Two crime scenes have been declared, and Patricia Street has been shut down, with locals unable to access their homes. An investigation is ongoing, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
The Coleraine incident follows the introduction of an Australia-first knife ban targeting young offenders in Victoria. Parents have been urged to hand in their children's machetes and knives at police amnesty posts, with 45 stations across the state hosting disposal bins for the three-month initiative. Carrying long, broad-bladed knives is now outlawed, with a sales ban already in effect.
