Pope Leo XIV Sends Subtle World Cup Message to Trump Over Referee Ban
Pope Leo XIV Sends Subtle World Cup Message to Trump

Pope Leo XIV has issued a subtle message to Donald Trump ahead of the World Cup, following the denial of entry to Somali referee Omar Artan. The 34-year-old, Africa's referee of the year in 2025, was set to become the first Somali to officiate at a World Cup finals but was stopped at Miami International Airport on Monday. Despite holding a diplomatic passport and a single-entry US visa, he was refused admission due to alleged associations with suspected members of terror organizations.

Pope's Message on Social Media

In a post on X, Pope Leo XIV wrote: "The World Cup begins tomorrow, and many will watch the matches. Soccer reminds us of something we must not forget: life is not a race to show off on our own, but a path we learn to walk together." He added: "Anyone who does not know how to pass the ball, even if they have talent, has not yet understood the game. Anyone who does not know how to live with and for others has not yet understood life." The Pope further emphasized compassion and kindness, stating that Christians must love selflessly and seek the good of others.

US Administration's Stance

A Trump administration source explained that upon inspection by Customs and Border Protection, derogatory information was discovered regarding Artan's association with suspected members of terror organisations, making him ineligible for admission under the Immigration and Nationality Act. The source stated: "President Trump's administration will not allow any security threat to enter our country - full stop." Somalia is one of 12 countries on a travel ban list introduced by President Trump.

Artan's Response

Speaking to the New York Times, Artan revealed he was questioned about links to Somali militant group Al Shabab, which he denied knowledge of. Upon returning to Mogadishu, he was greeted by government officials and representatives of the Somali Football Federation. He met President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud at the Presidential Palace and is expected to attend a public event at Mogadishu Stadium. Artan expressed determination to officiate at the 2030 World Cup, stating: "Everything is pre-destined. Fifa supported me well... I promise you that I'll be officiating you in the next World Cup."
