Piers Morgan has sparked backlash after questioning why Meghan Markle did not go public with allegations against her father, Thomas Markle, who has been accused of possessing thousands of indecent images of children. The Duchess of Sussex, 45, said she was made aware of the allegations in 2018, but Morgan argued that speaking out could have protected others.
Meghan's Response to Allegations
Thomas, 82, has been accused of possessing boxes of material containing indecent child sex images, allegations he has denied. His son, Thomas Markle Junior, reported him to the police, and Thomas is now believed to be at the centre of a police investigation.
Meghan, who has been estranged from her father since 2018, said in a statement: "I am deeply distressed at the news that has come to light in the last 24 hours, and my thoughts are with any children who may have been harmed." She added that in 2018, a letter was sent to the Metropolitan Police and Royalty and Specialist Protection, which was subsequently shared with her.
Morgan's Question and Backlash
Morgan, a long-standing critic of Prince Harry and Meghan, wrote on X: "This Thomas Markle story is shocking, and if guilty, he must face full force of the law. But it raises a lot of questions: if police alerted Meghan in 2018 to allegations so serious she ended all contact, why was he not arrested? And why did she not go public to protect others?"
The post drew immediate criticism, with many accusing the former Good Morning Britain presenter of shifting blame onto Meghan. One commenter said: "Do not go there, no matter how much you despise her you do not blame women for men’s behaviour!!" Another claimed: "You would have blamed her for disloyalty."
Thomas Markle's Denial
Thomas has vehemently denied the allegations, describing them as "sick lies" and insisting it was "the worst thing anyone could accuse me of". He told the Daily Mail: "I'm shocked, I'm hurt and I'm very upset that my son is making these accusations against me. I could never do what I'm being accused of. It's the worst thing anyone could accuse me of. This is bull****. It's just a bunch of lies. It's sick. I have no idea why Tom is trying to destroy me with these lies."
