Phoebe Bridgers' highly anticipated album 'Lost Weekend' is said to contain references to her broken engagement with Paul Mescal and his current relationship with Gracie Abrams. The record, her first since 2020's 'Punisher', arrives six years after her last solo work, a period that saw her get engaged, split from the 'Normal People' star, and begin a romance with Bo Burnham.
Lyrics Hint at Heartbreak
According to early reviews, the title track includes lines about calling off a marriage, which fans have linked to her split from Mescal. The Independent quotes lyrics: "I'm supposed to be married, but I called it off. I've been known to throw a tantrum when things are not the way I imagine them." The song continues: "I am restoring the natural order, learning the same lesson over and over again."
The Guardian's review suggests a swipe at Abrams in 'The Governor's Waltz' with the line: "She can pretend to be me since she took my place in my bed, on that stage." Fans speculate this refers to Abrams' bedroom-themed stage setup, which resembles photos Bridgers previously shared.
Past Relationship and New Romance
Bridgers and Mescal were first linked in 2020 after a flirty Twitter exchange, made their red carpet debut in 2021, and went Instagram official shortly after. Engagement rumours swirled, but they quietly split at the end of 2022. Bridgers moved on with Bo Burnham, while Mescal began dating Abrams publicly in 2024.
Adding complexity, Bridgers and Abrams were friends, with Abrams serving as support act on Bridgers' Reunion Tour in 2021 and both opening for Taylor Swift's Eras Tour in 2023.
Mescal has kept his romance with Abrams private. In a Rolling Stone interview last year, he said: "I don't know how to answer that. I actually do have an answer, but everything to do with that is deeply precious to me and I don't want to... I want to protect those things fundamentally."
'Lost Weekend' is set for release on August 14.
