Local police received multiple calls after the 48-year-old appeared on the livestream covered in what looked to be blood while holding a knife. Officers from the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office attended the property and spoke with family members outside. Authorities later said Perez had been inside the home on his own before deputies chose to "tactically disengage" while assessing the situation.
A spokesperson for the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office told the Daily Mail: "In many incidents involving a person experiencing a mental health crisis or actively harming themselves, deputies prioritise de-escalation by creating time, distance, and opportunities for communication. Unless there is an immediate threat to others, slowing the situation and utilising crisis intervention techniques can reduce the likelihood of a suicide-by-cop encounter and minimise the risk of injury to the individual, deputies, and the public."

Police later confirmed Perez had been "safely recovered and transported by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to a local hospital, where he is receiving medical attention." The sheriff's office also said members of its Crisis Response Unit and licensed mental health professionals remained with Perez's family to provide "support and resources."
