Penelope Keith, the beloved British actress best known for her role as Margo Leadbetter in the BBC sitcom The Good Life, has died at the age of 86. Her family confirmed she "died peacefully whilst living with cancer at her home in Surrey", as reported by BBC News.
How Old Was Penelope Keith in The Good Life?
Keith was born in 1940 and was 35 years old when she first appeared as Margo in The Good Life, which debuted on the BBC in 1975. The sitcom ran for four series from 1975 to 1978, following Tom Good (Richard Briers) and his wife Barbara (Felicity Kendal) as they pursued self-sufficiency at their home in Surbiton.
Keith's character, Margo, and her husband Jerry (Paul Eddington) were initially intended as minor characters but became central to the show. Margo's snobbish, social-climbing exterior contrasted with a warm heart, making her a fan favourite.
A Career Spanning Decades
Keith's career began in the late 1950s, and she was a former member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. She earned an Olivier Award for her stage work. Beyond The Good Life, she was also celebrated for playing Audrey fforbes-Hamilton in To the Manor Born.
In a 1985 interview with Sir Terry Wogan on the BBC, Keith reflected on why Margo resonated with audiences. "I don't know, she had some great lines," Keith said, recalling a moment when Margo called herself "the silent majority." She added, "I think that just went home to everybody; suddenly, she became a hero. Someone's challenging bureaucracy."
When asked if audiences could accept her in other roles, Keith replied, "Yes, I think they do. I've done a lot of performances on the television of what I think of as classic plays... And people now say, 'Penelope Keith, actress, performer, I don't think they think I'm Audrey or Margo.'"
The Good Life is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
