Dame Penelope Keith, the legendary TV star best known for her roles in the sitcoms The Good Life and To the Manor Born, has died at the age of 86 after a battle with cancer, her family announced.

In a statement, her family said: "We are deeply saddened to announce that Dame Penelope Keith died peacefully whilst living with cancer at her home in Surrey where she had lived for more than 50 years." The actress had been living with cancer for an undisclosed period before her death.

Keith rose to fame in the 1970s as Margo Leadbetter in the BBC sitcom The Good Life, a role that earned her a BAFTA TV Award for Best Light Entertainment Performance in 1976. She later starred as Audrey fforbes-Hamilton in To the Manor Born, a role that cemented her status as a household name. Beyond acting, she was also a presenter and appeared in numerous stage productions.
