NBA legend Paul Pierce was arrested on Tuesday night on suspicion of driving under the influence after being found asleep at the wheel in Los Angeles, according to California Highway Patrol.
Officers were responding to a multi-vehicle crash on the northbound lanes of US Highway 101 at around 10:40 p.m. When they reopened the lanes about an hour later, they spotted a Range Rover SUV stopped in the road south of the crash. Pierce was found asleep in the driver's seat, and officers noticed signs of alcohol impairment, leading to a DUI investigation.
Pierce, 47, was arrested on a misdemeanour charge of driving under the influence of alcohol. The case will be reviewed by the Los Angeles city attorney. He has not yet responded to requests for comment.
The 10-time NBA All-Star and 2008 Finals MVP played 15 seasons for the Boston Celtics, as well as stints with the Brooklyn Nets, Washington Wizards, and LA Clippers before retiring in 2017. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021. Pierce recently co-hosted the Fox Sports show Speak, which was cancelled in July 2025.
